Now that semifinalist letters have been sent to principals and home schoolers, the Class of 2022 statewide Selection Index cutoffs (based off junior-year PSAT or alternate-entry SAT scores) for the National Merit Scholarship competition for all 50 US states—plus US Territories, US International, and Washington, D.C. aka District of Columbia—have officially leaked. Due to the College Board's deliberate obfuscation on the issue, there is a common misconception that SATs and ACTs are "curved" before the test instead of after, when in reality there are two separate processes that determine the raw to scaled score conversion : "equating" pre-test, and "scaling/curving/smoothing" post-exam.
