McElroy Tutoring is currently hiring part-time (5+ hrs/wk) and full-time tutors (20+ hrs/wk) in all subjects!    Here is the brief version of who we are, and what we offer our tutors:

-Now representing over 100 elite educators and tutors in 25 American cities.  Private tutoring for nearly every academic subject and standardized test (K-8 through college/university), including music lessons.

-Founded by a Harvard graduate, standardized test expert and private tutoring veteran with over a decade of experience.

-Granted a rare A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau

-A state-of-the-art website that allows our students to quickly find and instantly connect with the best tutors in their area.

-Some of the best tutor pay rates, if not the very best pay rates, in the industry (tutors take home up to 90% of what we charge our clients). Tutors can earn anywhere from $22.50-$150/hour, depending on skill and experience, and our pay scale is designed so that successful tutors can gradually move their way up the pay ladder over time.

-A comprehensive web advertising campaign that spans both coasts, a full-time telephone & office staff, and a well-respected website that consistently ranks at the top of Google Searches for tutoring.
-Specializing in SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT, GRE, GMAT, LSAT & MCAT Test Prep, private academic tutoring, and college admissions consulting.

-If you’ve worked for another test-prep company before, then we’re especially interested in hearing from you.

-Unlike most other tutoring companies, we do NOT ask you to sign a non-compete contract.

OK, that’s it for the short version.

Here’s the longer version:

by Brian McElroy
Founder & President, McElroy Tutoring

So you’ve done some tutoring before, and you’ve discovered that you have a knack for teaching in a one-on-one setting. Perhaps you’ve helped your college classmates with their problem sets. Or maybe you’ve helped your younger cousin with his/her algebra homework and English essays. You may even have experience working for one of the fat cat, franchised test-prep companies. And despite the fact that your parents and friends don’t consider it a “real” job, you’re considering tutoring as a possible profession.

And why wouldn’t you want to tutor? It’s a dream job, really: flexible hours (afternoons, evenings and weekends), no boss constantly looking over your shoulder, and great hourly pay. (Contrary to what most people think, I can tell you from experience that tutoring IS a real job that pays real money.) You can also make a huge difference in your students’ lives: our best tutors are not only teachers, but mentors as well.

The problem is that finding clients is very difficult these days, because there is so much competition. Craigslist is great, but anyone can call him/herself a tutor, and every day more and more people post tutoring ads on the site. Most prospective tutors soon become discouraged and look for work elsewhere, because they aren’t able to find enough clients/students to pay the bills. Even when you do find a client, you have to deal with last minute cancellations, clients that either forget or refuse to pay, and all sorts of additional hassles.

Of course, you could decide work for a big tutoring company who will find students for you, but then you’ll often have the opposite problem. You’ll most likely be overworked, underpaid (usually tutors make around a 15% cut of what the company charges), and be forced into a “one size fits all” method of teaching that focuses on the company’s technique rather than letting you formulate your own unique teaching style. I know this from experience as well: I am a former Princeton Review instructor who quickly became disenchanted with the lousy pay and mediocre materials.  Plus, they usually won’t even let you work for any other tutoring companies!

So what’s the solution, you ask? You need to work for a company that gives you the best of both worlds: it finds you clients, promotes your services,  provides you with access to helpful tutoring advice and pays you very equitably, yet still allows you to embrace your own unique teaching styles and techniques.

That company is called McElroy Tutoring, and I‘d like you to consider working for us.

For those of you who already work as private tutors, or work for another tutoring company, you should know that competition is not an issue with us--unlike most of the big companies, we never make you sign a non-compete agreement or limit your tutoring options in any way.  Our tutors are always free to start their own tutoring business or work for as many other tutoring companies as they like. We’re so confident in what we can offer you as a tutoring company that we’re not afraid to let you seek work elsewhere.

A little bit about me:  After quitting my job at the Princeton Review in 2002, I started McElroy Tutoring with little more than a home office and a classified ad in the local newspaper.  Now that company is one of the most successful independent tutoring companies in the United States, and maintains a rare A+ rating by the Better Business Bureau

I realized a long time ago that it’s not the company, or “brand-name,” that makes good tutors. Nor is it a silly, weekend-long training program where companies “certify” their tutors and then toss them into the fire for lousy pay. The only way to learn is by doing, and the only way to become a master tutor is to tutor. We give you that opportunity.

We also offer some of the most best pay rates in the country; tutor pay rates start at $22.50/hr, and we will happily pay more for the services of more experienced educators.  Many of our most experienced tutors make $50/hr or more!

In addition, our state-of-the art website allows students and clients to easily find you and contact you directly, and our friendly telephone staff is always available during business hours to help you connect with students and to answer any questions you may have.
